How to Find Your North Star in Just One Day: A Real-World Leadership Sprint with DİSÜDER
CLIENT: DISÜDER | WORKSHOP/EVENT: North Star – Design Sprint | Istanbul, 26.07.2025
Would you enter a ship where the captain doesn’t know where they’re sailing?
Most of us wouldn’t. Not because we’re afraid of the sea, but because we intuitively know what’s at stake when direction is unclear. Without a destination, every journey becomes a risk. Every decision becomes reactive. And trust dissolves before the journey even begins.
Yet in business, we encounter this situation more often than we admit. Ask a room full of executives, entrepreneurs, or even senior managers one simple question: What’s your North Star? You’re likely to be met with long silences, vague metaphors, or a list of KPIs that miss the point entirely.
What Is a North Star, Really?
The North Star, historically, is the one fixed point in the sky that helped sailors navigate through darkness. It does not move. It does not lie. And it does not get lost in clouds of opinion. That is what made it so powerful, not just as a literal guide, but as a symbol.
In business, the North Star serves the same function. It is not just your purpose. Not just your mission or your vision. It is the synthesis of all three, sharpened into a single orientation point that guides your team, builds trust with your clients, and helps you say yes or no with intention.
Without a North Star, it is barely possible to run a sustainable, successful business.
But finding it is one of the most challenging tasks. You have to dig deep, brainstorm with clarity, and ultimately synthesize a purpose, vision, and mission that align with your leadership, your team, and the values of the clients you want to reach.
Without it, even the best strategy remains fragmented. Without it, your brand drifts. Without it, leadership becomes effortful. And followers feel the confusion long before it is spoken.
The Challenge: One Day to Navigate the Unknown
On July 26, 2025, I led a one-day Design Sprint workshop in Istanbul with DİSÜDER, the Association for a Digital and Sustainable Future. Our task was to define their North Star.
DİSÜDER is a young, ambitious business association with a vision of building a more digitally empowered and ecologically conscious future. Like many purpose-driven collectives, their energy needed orientation. Their ideas needed structure. Their story needed voice.
And we only had one day.

The Process: From Exploration to Alignment
To move fast without losing depth, I blended three forces.
- First, Design Thinking gave us a structured method to explore and decide together.
- Second, storytelling helped us build emotional connection and trust across teams.
- Third, I used academic insights not as abstract theory, but to create a subtle framework that pointed the teams in the right direction without telling them exactly what to do.
This approach helped participants co-create with more autonomy and confidence. It allowed the group to find direction together and form a shared understanding, without needing constant input from me. That shift toward intrinsic clarity made collaboration faster, deeper, and more meaningful.
We started with the human layer.
What motivates us? What do we value? What do we aspire to offer, and to whom?
Then we went deeper.
What makes this association different? What competitive advantage can it offer its members? What are the hidden opportunities no one is talking about?
And finally, we confronted the core.
What kind of future does DİSÜDER want to help create? What unifying statement can guide every project, every partnership, every public appearance?
Through intense hands-on sessions, collaborative writing, and rapid synthesis, each team drafted its own version of the association’s purpose, vision, and mission. By the end of the day, something had shifted. Not just the clarity on paper, but the energy in the room.
They had a North Star in sight.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
Large international brands understand the value of a North Star. It shapes how they speak, how they hire, how they innovate, how they scale. But many small and mid-sized organizations still rely on instinct, especially in cultures where agility is prized over structure.
That may have worked in calmer times.
But today we are sailing in storms.
When uncertainty hits, only the most capable captains make it through. And clients, partners, and stakeholders do not follow charisma alone. They follow clarity. They follow conviction. They follow leaders who know where they are going.
The Turkish Advantage: Culture as Catalyst
What made this one-day sprint possible was not just the method, but the people. Turkish culture brought openness, warmth, and hospitality into the room. It allowed people to drop their defenses quickly and engage deeply. The emotional connection was not a by-product. It was a critical success factor.
Strong teams form when emotional safety meets strategic urgency. That is exactly what happened here.
Final Thought
Authentic leadership begins when the journey becomes a shared mission, and people choose to follow.
If you do not know your North Star, now is the time to find it.
People no longer follow authority.
- They follow direction.
- They follow meaning.
- They follow a purpose they can belong to.
